THAT ALL TEACHERS SHOULD KNOW

1. EQUAL, UNEQUAL AND VIOLENT RELATIONSHIP

Every relationship is different – and good relationship is based on mutual equality and respect of partners, without manipulation, intimidation or violence.

2. DIGITAL SEXUAL AND GENDER BASED VIOLENCE

The nature and causes of sexual and gender based violence are the same, but digital space has many characteristics that could encourage and enable these acts, which are equally harmful and with severe consequences as any other violence.

3. TRUST BETWEEN STUDENTS AND TEACHERS

Teachers don’t only guide students through the learning process, they are also role models and serve for support in the development of personalities of students, especially when they are exposed to negative influences and experiences.

4. EXAMPLES OF GOOD PRACTICES

Efficient prevention is the key for reducing the gender based violence – these include significant and important changes at an individual level, at school level, at community and society levels – teachers are essential initiators of those changes – there are many examples.

Stop every form of violence! React – stop, report, seek information – every time violence is ongoing, when there is knowledge or doubt that it is present!
Young people need to learn through action and change. Adults have a lot to learn from young people! An active encounter of young people and adults around topics that are relevant to young people, while respecting different positions and perspectives, is crucial for building a relationship of trust.
Violence cannot be a ‘personal problem’. Everyone in a school has the obligation to recognize violence and respond appropriately to all forms of violence the female and male students may either be exposed to, or committing.
It should be borne in mind that not everyone reacts in the same way in situations of violence and abuse in intimate partner relationships, nor does every person react with the same intensity, and that some victims’ alterations of behavior are not necessarily negative as such. Thus, there are no ‘typical’ signs and ‘typical’ victims.
